There’s been a lot of turnover in the squad. How have the new guys fitted in? The new guys have fitted in really well. Obviously they’re all good footballers, and they’re good guys as well. We’re just very excited to have them on board and excited for the season to start proper.
Is there any of the new signings that have caught your eye?
I’ve been very, very excited to see what Tommy Hiariej has got to offer. He’s a very good player and you can tell already how sharp he is, how much he wants to be here and how much he wants to win games. He’s one that comes to mind on who will be a big player for us this season. You’ve got ex-Jets Andrew Hoole and Ben Kennedy at the club now. Will that spice up the F3 derby with the Newcastle Jets? A lot has been written about the last few years of the F3 derby but if anyone saw the last game we had against them, at our home ground, I know it was for the wooden spoon, but the heat was definitely there. I’m just thrilled to be playing with Hooley again. I played with him at Young Socceroos level and he’s a fantastic player and a fantastic acquisition. Also Ben Kennedy who helps our goalkeeping stocks. With Roy going that way it might end up being a narrative for the fans and the journalists alike. But for us it’s just another game and we play them in the first game and we need to try and win it.
You finished eighth last season, what’s the goal for the new campaign?
We’ve haven’t set an initial goal really, we just want to play well and win as many games as possible. We’re confident we can win a lot more games than we did last season and the season before, and wherever that takes us is wherever we’ll end up finishing. We’re not putting any emphasis on a set finish, we just want to try and go out there and win as many games as possible. Last season you can see the growth and improvement of the team under Paul Okon. Has that given the club a positive feel going into the new campaign? Absolutely. That’s what he would have been looking for as well, to put his stamp on the football team. Obviously inheriting a squad last year he’d want to put his own spin on things. The game plan was advanced for this season too so it’s really exciting for this campaign in particular.
What does the coach want to see from you individually this season?
I think much the same. He wants me to create chances for the other boys and personally I want to score a few more goals. If I’m making chances for my teammates, then that’s my primary job as a winger, and then just chip in when I can.
Have you got any particular goals that you want to reach this season?
Scoring more goals is an area I want to improve. I was happy with my season last season and the only thing maybe was scoring a few more goals. I had a few chances, a few times I was a bit unlucky, but that’s something in my game that I would like to improve more. But just do much of the same and get at fullbacks and create chances, hopefully have a good campaign.
