My Greatest Goal Lisa De Vanna

Australian Four Four Two - - CONTENTS -

It was about four years ago, I was playing in the NWSL for Sky Blue FC, the same team that Sammy Kerr is in and it was just a club game. I was in my bedroom before the game being indecisive about what boots I should wear. I was thinking, I don’t know if I should wear this one or that one. I had that battle with my head because I’m so superstitious.

I was scoring a few goals at that time. It was just a game we needed to win to keep momentum for making the top four. It was just a normal league game. The game wasn’t really important for that season but it did put the team on the map after I scored the goal.

I just remember doing a 1-2 with one of the players and she just flicked the ball in the air. Because I was running into the box, I actually went past the ball, so I just thought I’m going to do a bicycle kick. When I was in the air, I wasn’t really even thinking anything. I just thought whatever I do I better connect with this ball otherwise I’m going to look completely stupid if I miss. Obviously, I connected with it and I didn’t see the ball go into the back of the net but the reaction of my teammates and the crowd, it was obviously a decent goal.

It made such big headlines all over the world. It brought football to Australia’s attention, being an Australian and doing that. When I got home it was just so viral throughout the internet, through media back home. Around the world I had people in England, France and Sweden message me saying they’d just seen my goal. It was a pretty special thing in terms of being an Australian to be able to get football in Australia on the map with that. When you score good goals like that, it gives you a lot of confidence in yourself but also in the team. It made the Puskas award. I didn’t end up making the top three but I had to compete with Ibrahimovic with his bicycle kick against England, plus Neymar as well.

I scored a decent goal against the US in 2012. I ran from the halfway line and beat their player. Then I just beat the keeper and put the ball in the top corner. It was a pretty big goal to score and it was against the US team who, at the time, were coming off winning the Olympic Games as the number one team in the world. That one was pretty good. I think my goal against Brazil in September would definitely be in my top three best goals I’ve scored.
