OH RY AN DO LIKE TO BE BESIDE THE SEASIDE...
Y AN SEALS CLUB RECORD MOVE TO BRIGHTON
RAustralia number one Mat Ryan and the Socceroos were in camp in Adelaide in June ahead of a crucial World Cup qualifier against Saudi Arabia when rumours emerged of a big-money move from newly-promoted Brighton & Hove Albion. It seemed fantasy given the context but just over a week later the shot-stopper inked a five-year deal with the Seagulls for a then-club record fee, rumoured to be worth approximately $8.4million.
The transfer happened around the same time as Aaron Mooy’s record-breaking permanent deal with Huddersfield, dropping Ryan in at seventh in the all-time most expensive Australian footballers, having already demanded $9.7m upon his move from Club Brugge to Valencia in 2015.
Ryan only made 10 La Liga appearances at the Spanish powerhouse with whom he’d inked a six-year deal. He found himself on the outer, struggling for game-time and battling to hold his Australia number one spot, although a six-month loan spell at Genk helped his chances of finding a new club.
After the deal went through, Ryan wrote: “I would like to thank Valencia CF for giving me the opportunity to represent a club with such a rich history and to have enabled me to achieve a dream of playing in the La Liga.”
