STRIKING OMISSION

Australian Four Four Two - - ROOS’ ROCKY ROAD -

Former great Australian striker Damian Mori has some interesting thoughts about where Australia sits with the quality of its strikers and why. “I thought Tomi Juric did really well overall in this campaign,” Mori said. “It only takes one goal to go in and then your confidence changes. I think he just has to persist. As a country, I don’t think we have a lot of strikers at the moment, but that could come down to a lot of things and one of them might be the situation at junior level. When I was a junior it was always two up front, so you always had two strikers. Now we seem to just have the one. “The role of a striker at senior level has changed somewhat as well from when I played, so maybe that’s something we need to look at adjusting to in junior development. But it’s a tricky situation and I don’t know what the definite answer is, to be honest. “You go back to when there was Mark Viduka and John Aloisi, we had an abundance of strikers playing at the top level. I guess every country goes through cycles and maybe we’re just going through one of those periods where striker is not a position where we have good numbers.”
