Australian Four Four Two - - WORLD CUP 1974 -

What advice have you got for the class of 2018?

Go out there and represent your country in the best possible way. If everyone goes out with that mindset, we’ll be a better team than what we’ve been showing recently. I think their attitude has been lax and our commitment has been a bit shallow. It’s time we got it all back and put it with the skill and ability we’ve got. We’d be a very different team.

Who’s your favourite current Socceroo for the squad heading to Russia 2018?

I’ve got to go to a goalkeeper. From what everybody thought he was to what he’s made himself to be now, Mat Ryan has done a phenomenal job. What he’s doing between the posts is very, very good. He’s delivering. If he keeps going at the rate he’s going at now, he’ll be one of the best in the world.

Who’s the biggest dangerman they’ll face in Group C?

I think when you get to a World Cup, every opponent is dangerous. Anyone who goes on the field thinking a particular player is the one that requires to be taken care of, that only creates a bit of space for someone who supposedly isn’t good but all of a sudden becomes a superstar. We should treat each and every one in exactly the same manner.

Who will be the star of this World Cup?

I don’t think we’ve ever been in a period within football where there are so many totally committed players. You just need to see the top leagues in the world, the pace and the skill with which they’re playing the game are just quite extraordinary. I would hesitate from nominating anybody, just because of that. But I’d love to think someone like Daniel Arzani could come through and do it.

What’s your prediction for the Socceroos?

I think there is enough pressure on them at the moment for them to play well. I think we might be pleasantly surprised with what they do. We need the national team to play well right now because of problems we’ve got within the country. I hope the players on the field show us the way.

Who will win it all?

Anybody’s guess. Germany and Brazil will be very, very hard to beat. But I’ll say Australia. Gentlemen, you are going to represent your country. Come back and have everybody talking about what you did in the best possible manner.
