THE NORTH FACE has released a potentially gamechanging outer shell that combines the soft, flexible, easy-wearing feel and appearance of a soft-shell, with the robustness and waterproof capabilities of a hard shell jacket.
This Apex Flex GTX jacket is a first of its kind jacket that combines a soft-weave, outer fabric with a breathable waterproof membrane – Gore-tex 3L – and stretch knit backer for optimum flexibility. The soft-knit inner fabric also ensures body heat retention, and is comfortable against the skin. The garment is fully seam-sealed and 100% windproof as well. Other features include an attached (fully adjustable) hood, hand and chest pockets, pit-zip vents, adjustable cuffs, hem cinch-cord and an average weight of around 680g complete the high-end garment.
This is exciting news for adventurers; in the past there’s often been a decision to make regarding whether to take the soft-shell for windy conditions (and hope it doesn’t rain) or the hard shell for the ultimate protection, albeit with a comfort, noise and warmth handicap. Or you had to take both, adding weigh and bulk to your pack/duffle/bags. An outer shell that is super comfortable and boasts maximum versatility in regards to the conditions and activities it can be used in, is a big win-win.
The North Face Apex GTX retails for $450. Stay tuned for a comprehensive gear test in an upcoming issue of AG Outdoor.
