The blue-banded bee ( Amegilla cingulata) is an Australian native bee common to many regions, especially Sydney. They are partial to lavender and attracted to blue objects, including clothing of that colour. These solitary bees can perform a special type of ‘buzz pollination’, a technique used to release pollen firmly held within flowers. (Image:James Dorey)
