The manta ray is the world’s largest ray. These usually solitary, gentle giants can be spotted gliding through waters around Lady Elliot Island year-round, but as many as 700 congregate in the coolest months from June to August. Being the southernmost coral cay on the Great Barrier Reef, Lady Elliot’s waters have so far escaped the coral bleaching that struck further north in 2016 and 2017.
