Back to the wild

- Jo Runciman, AGS chair

EACH YEAR GENEROUS DONATIONS from shoppers in Australian Geographic retail stores raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for Australian wildlife conservation. The stores’ dedicated staff work hard to help promote these fundraising efforts. They do so with great passion and enthusiasm and we are thankful for all they do on our behalf. Of course, we also extend that gratitude to you who, so generously, give money either via the stores or directly to the AG Society online. One of the recent projects to benefit from these funds is Devil Ark run by Tim Faulkner, the 2015 AG Conservationist of the Year. Devil Ark is a Tassie devil captive breeding program based in the Barrington Tops area of NSW that also runs conservation projects for other native species such as eastern quolls (I’m holding one in the picture here.) During November–December 2016 we raised funds to help build a new facility for the quolls and this month we are proudly handing over $50,000 towards this initiative. Later this year, we will be running a series of weekend workshops at the Devil Ark facility, where AG members will be able to participate in breeding-program activities and also explore the site’s beautiful country with expert guides. Look out for details in upcoming issues and on our website.
