BILLIE JORGEN SPEAKERS
Billie Jorgen, a Western Australian loudspeaker company founded by Lindsay Goddard, has released its first loudspeaker, the Series 5, that has a unique internal construction.
The Billie Jorgen Series 5 is a floor-standing design. Despite being 1350mm high, the speakers are very slender, at only 182mm wide and 210mm deep.
The design is a three-driver two-way, bass-reflex, using dual 108mm Scanspeak Illuminator bass/midrange drivers that cross over to a 30mm Scanspeak Revelator Beryllium dome tweeter.
The two-way, modified Butterworth crossover network uses hybrid 2nd and 3rd order slopes either side of a crossover point at 2.83kHz, and features state-of-the-art components including Rike capacitors and Pathaudio resistors.
The bass reflex cabinet is made from solid timber, while the bass reflex port is what Goddard describes as a ‘ five element componentised vent unit’ that provides five differentlysized exits from the enclosure.
The enclosure itself uses what Goddard describes as ‘box-in-a-box’ architecture. Goddard, who founded Billie Jorgen and is its chief designer, told Australian Hi-Fi Magazine: ‘ I had this idea that it would be a useful contribution to offer to the hi-fi community—and indeed to the public in general—a pair of loudspeakers that really deliver. Let’s be very honest here, most speakers aren’t much better than they were in 1974. And of course they have to have over-riding good looks. Something that will have a sense of place no matter where they are placed.’ He rates the impedance of the Series 5 as nominally 8Ω and the sensitivity at 86dBSPL/w/m.
The Billie Jorgen Series 5 is available in a range of high-gloss colour painted finishes that includes black, white, red, blue, green, and cream. The speakers are priced at $21,400 per pair (RRP).
