How Did I Find Myself Here? (Anti-)

Australian HIFI - - ON TEST -

Because How Did I Find Myself Here? is no mere reunion album, it’s an immediate continuation from when the alt-rock neopsych visionaries called it quits at the end of the 1980s. Most of the rock elements take influence from ‘90s alt and college scenes, though these are just one part of the broad psych and blues spectrum that ensconces their stories. The music guides your emotions to places that flitter between happiness, chaos and fear, and beneath every layer is a tonne of subtle guitar work, that adds an ambient je ne sais quoi. Jangly guitars create discomfort, tearing riffs build tension and jagged blues tones draw you deep into haunting nightmares. Though often hopeful, it’s a dark album that occupies that space between fantasy and reality, where things get so strange they almost seem surreal. But their ruminations are far too honest to be grounded in anything but the truth. P.Z.
