Tour Bath on foot and you’ll encounter an Austen allusion at every turn. In Persuasion, Queen Square was regarded by the Misses Musgrove as too old fashioned: “We must be in a good situation – none of your Queen Squares for us!” While Northanger Abbey’s Isabella and Catherine were flummoxed by Cheap Street: “Everybody acquainted with Bath may remember the difficulties of crossing Cheap Street”. Milsom Street, meanwhile, was Austen’s favourite destination for bonnets and gowns.
