2004 Bob Jane T-Marts Bathurst 1000 Winner
Greg Murphy/Rick Kelly
#15 Kmart Racing Holden Commodore VY Chassis – HRT 044
Many believe the 2003 Kmart Bathurst winner was the same car that won the 2004 race, though that is not the case – however both were originally Holden Racing Team cars.
The ’04 winner was built new in 2001 as a VX for Jason Bright, debuted at Eastern Creek and driven by Bright for the remainder of that season and then again for the first half of 2002.
It was then moved across to Kmart Racing and became Todd Kelly’s Kmart #15 car from Winton onwards when Bright debuted a new chassis.
Driven by Kelly for the remainder of 2002 (save for the endurance races where it was rested), it became Rick Kelly’s car in 2003 when Todd moved across to HRT (to drive the 043 chassis too!).
The younger of the brothers ran it for the first half of the season before stepping into another chassis, so 044 was refurbished and re-emerged in 2004 as a VY with Kelly again driving.
He won in the wet in it at Eastern Creek before pairing with Murphy to finish fourth at Sandown as the #51 entry. They swapped the car back to Kelly’s regular #15 for Bathurst where they debuted a new Spider-Man 2 livery and claimed a second-straight win at Mount Panorama.
Kelly ran the car for the rest of the season and won a race at Symmons Plains before Murphy drove it for the season-finale at Eastern Creek.
Purchased by the D’Alberto family in 2005 it was raced by Tony D’Alberto in that year’s HPDC Series (now known as the Dunlop Series) and was run by their team for driver Mark McNally in 2006 and 2007.
Since then it has been used as a ride car on occasion by the D’Alberto team, which withdrew from competing in the V8 Supercars Championship in 2014.
It was put up for sale earlier this year with a range of parties taking interest in securing this piece of Bathurst history.
