Shane O’Hara – HDT VK SS
When Shane bought a Calais Director in 2007 he ended up with more than he bargained for – two cars for the price of one. The seller also had a badly damaged 1985 VK SS that he was hoping to get rid of too. So, ultimately, Shane went back to pick up the second car. “[The VK SS] was hit really hard in the left-hand front, just outside Panthers [Leagues Club] in Penrith. The bloke who was selling it still had the [4.9-litre] motor; the car was all there, but it was just in bits.” Shane’s original plan was just to repair the damage and put it back together, but his wife, bless her, reckoned he was better off giving it a full restoration. So that’s what he did. Three years of toil later the VK SS was back on the road in time for a Brock Commodore gathering in Albury-Wodonga in October 2010. “And it absolutely hammered rain the whole way down! We drove through flood waters with a car that was all mint underneath when we had left Sydney!” Shane has gone to great lengths to return this car to the condition in which it drove out of the dealership. There is one key exterior difference: the subtle black chin spoiler. These originated on the police pack versions and Shane tracked one down from a regional Holden dealer. Shane is such a HDT VK tragic, he’s built himself a tribute car celebrating Brock’s Big Banger 1984 Bathurst win.
