It’s hard to go past the wet 1984 ATCC round when Dick Johnson’s green XE Falcon slid its way to victory, especially as the scrap behind him saw positions continually changing. Moffat’s Mazda fell to sixth early and provided much entertainment as he stormed past Steve Masterton (Falcon), John Harvey (in #05), Jim Richards (BMW) and fellow RX7 runner Peter McLeod. He momentarily slotted into second as he lapped backmarker Garry Willmington under the bridge, but they tangled and Moffat speared off at high speed. Moff’s Mazda leapt over the levee banking and clobbered a shrubby tree with a meaty trunk. Moffat suffered a fractured sternum, a broken finger and his RX7 was a write-off.
