Many of SPIR’s most memorable moments were of the big crash variety, several of them outlined in the History 101 section. The granddaddy of them all, in terms of cars involved, was the 1985 Australian Endurance Championship round. A combination of wet weather and dropped oil saw IPEC Corner become a skating rink. At least 10 cars ended up in one of the circuit’s stormwater ditches, including the BMW of Jim Richards, which won the race when it was restarted. Older race fans are likely to nominate the spectacle of the early sportscar enduros Le Mans starts and the involvement of exoticars to match – Ford GT40, Ferrari P2 and 250LM.
