issue we put the limited edition V8 Commodore road cars offered by Wayne Gardner Racing in the spotlight. When we cast around for a suitable WGR Commodore S1 to photograph, we were lucky enough to net WGR #002, a pristine white example that was the fi rst production-spec example completed. It was also driven for a spell by the Wollongong Whiz.
Now here’s #001 – the prototype that starred in the marketing material, including the brochure/flyer shown on this page.
Owner Mark Alexander dropped us a line after seeing issue #83.
“It was used in the famous 1994 Motor magazine article and all the original brochures and paraphernalia,” Mark explains. “It’s like it came out of the showroom. It was the only one with leather Recaros and the Momo steering wheel, amongst other things. It’s a piece of motor racing history and is priceless, being the prototype car that started it all.” Mark understands that he’s the third owner. “It was owned by Wayne then sold to a guy who owned it for 20 years and then I bought it.”
Great to see that the list of WGR survivors includes #001, #002 and the car that trialled the Talon bodykit. That car (see Muscle Mail) was owned by Talon’s Alan Kendal and is now owned by Nathan Martin.
