Coals to Newcastle
The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion is the United States’ biggest historic race meeting, held each August at the classic Laguna Seca circuit in California. To celebrate the Shelby GT350’s 50th anniversary, the 2015 ‘reunion’ featured dedicated races for the model, attracting over 40 entries. All but three of those entries were from North America, the home of the Mustang. One of these imports was Sydney’s Terry Lawlor – who just happened to beat the Yanks at their own game that weekend.
Lawlor starred behind the wheel of a green and gold 1966 Shelby GT350 at the famous circuit. He won Saturday morning’s race, before finishing second later that day, hampered by overheating and tyre problems.
Lawlor is a regular on the Heritage Touring Car scene in an ex-Colin Bond Caltex Ford Sierra. The Shelby was built by Aussie Mustang identity Chad Parrish. Lawlor’s win ranks among the best performances by Aussies on the world motorsporting stage in 2015. And it’s appropriate that it gets a run in AMC’s Mustangs in Australia issue.
