M535 is no replica

Australian Muscle Car - - Muscle Mail -

Just reading through issue #88 and noticed the column by Chris Davidson. It was nice to see a mention of me and Adrian Brady and our European exploits, but I need to ask you for corrections to the content.

My M535 is not a replica. It was built to European Group 2 regulations in 1981 by Willie Martini, who had the ‘Workstadt’ and BMW dealership at the Nurburgring. He raced it in 1000km and 24 hour races at the ‘Ring until 1986 when its homologation expired. It was stored in his showroom until 2002, when it was recommissioned and has been raced extensively at Spa, Nurburgring and Zandvoort since then. It is the only Group 2 BMW 535 ever built and is completely original.

After buying the car in 2014, I raced it at Spa Classic last year, and this year we used the Donington Historic Festival as a warm-up for Spa. Best regards.

ED: Our apologies, Bill, for mistakenly referring to your M535 as a replica. Thank you for setting us straight and expanding upon the car’s history.
