Sydney three-piece band The Maelstrom is helping spread the legend of the Torana XU-1 to a new generation via its salute to the giant-killing Holden.
The Maelstorm describes itself as “a classic rock band that spans rockabilly, hard rock, classic rock, blues and we even dabble into pop.” Drummer and song-writer CJ Bali says the surf-style song is a tribute to more than just the car.
“It came after my beloved Rose passed away from Motor Neurone Disease,” CJ says. “Rose, she was from Manly and she lived her life near the beach and enjoyed surfing. Since Rose and I both loved cars – muscle cars – and we’d go to car shows... it became apparent that I had to write an Aussie muscle car song with a surf tone.
“There are so many car songs out there which feature Fords, Dodges, Cadillacs and I never heard on the radio a song about an Aussie muscle car. The XU-1 to me is the epitome of Australian ingenuity of engineering of its time. And so the song itself is about the Torana XU-1 and it touches upon winning Bathurst 500 with Peter Brock.”
The other members of The Maelstrom are guitarist Jeff Cripps and lead singer and bassist John Kater. The song begins... I gotta tell ya ‘bout a car that’s totally cool, She’s a mini thoroughbred on the road it rules. She chews up the Fords and the Chargers too, She’s a real Aussie beauty through and through! She’s got what it takes and she ain’t no fake, My Torana’s gonna leave ya in the straight. CHORUS She’s my XU-1, my XU-1 – a sporty little car that’s a lot of fun! She’s my XU-1, my XU-1 – an Aussie muscle car that’s number one! She’s a top little car and she has me spun! She’s my XU-1, my XU-1...
When AMC visited iTunes to have a listen, we found that it was actually one of three Torana XU-1 songs produced!
