THINGS NOT TO MISS
Sunday October 30 sees the Masters host the 2016 A9X Torana Club Nationals’ show ‘n’ shine. It’s the first time since 2005 that Sydney has hosted the A9X Nationals. Jim Richards will race a JPS Team BMW 635CSi he drove in the Group C era. Car owner Pete Sturgeon will reunite JR with the sweet-sounding, newly-restored beauty in Heritage Touring Car. Finnish rally ace Rauno Aaltonen and local legend Bob Holden will be reunited on the Sunday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the pair’s 1966 Bathurst 500 win in a Mini Cooper S. An all-Mini race will be held on main race day, October 30, drawing from the Group N ranks. Meantime, a big Cooper S contingent will be on display and be part of the lunchtime parade. Keep an eye out on October 30 for the time and location of the Legends autograph session. Cars from the Australian 5.0-litre Touring Car Association will hit the track for a series of ‘spirited demos’. These are the earliest Supercars – the original cars from the 1993 to 2002 pre-Project Blueprint era in period liveries. It’s 30 years since the VL Commodore Group A’s launch and the 2016 Masters will see Brock VL Group A owners mark the red rocket’s milestone birthday and the 10th anniversary of Peter Brock’s passing. A wide selection of Brockmobiles will be on-track in various classes. Take a wander around the paddock area and skidpan – you’ll be surprised at the cars you will stumble across.
