Taronga test track
Iwas just reading about the ex-Allan Grice A9X in issue #88 and I thought I might pass on my recollections of one of them.
In 1980, I moved to Sydney from Canberra and spent most of the year working for Colin Bond with the Ford Rally Team. As it was winding up, I ended up working at a Shell service station in Mosman Junction, while I pondered my future.
One of the workshop’s customers owned an ex-Grice Torana hatchback. I always thought he was a dentist. It was still painted in Craven Mild colours without the sign writing. It had all the race gear except for road tyres, a milder cam and a road legal exhaust.
The thing that stands out in my mind were the front brakes. Being racing brakes, they had floating discs and the locating splines were very worn. It was possible to hold the brakes on and rotate the front wheels about 5-10 degrees because of the wear.
I used to use Bradley’s Head Road as a ‘test track’ for road testing and this car was a whole lot of fun from Taronga Zoo’s wharf up the hill. Lachlan Maclean ED: Thanks for your recollections, Lachlan. For an update on this car and the recollections of your customer, the dentist, see this issue’s V8 Sleuth section.
