Bathurst, NSW, April 11, 1966 – Event 6
If Event 4 (see previous spread) reflected local motor racing’s past, in many ways Event 6 represented the future. The 1966 Australian Touring Car Championship was contested over a single 20-lap encounter, won by Ian Geoghegan and his Mustang from Norm Beechey’s Chev Nova. It was the first time the national tin-top title was fought out between Ford and GM V8s, a theme that stretches to the current day. Behind the two stars – and star cars – the field was thin, with just third-placed Kevin Bartlett (Alfa Romeo GTA) avoiding being lapped. The field may have lacked depth, but the 20,000-strong crowd showed that interest in touring car racing was rising.
