Riverside, California, September 18, 1966 – Trans-Am, Round 7
You’ll never guess the name of the photographer who put himself in the line of fire to take this shot at the inaugural Trans-American Sedan Series’ finale? Harry Firth! ‘H’ was there as Allan Moffat’s co-driver, the pair’s Cortina finishing seventh in the four-hour event behind fellow Aussies Frank Gardner (Cortina, fifth) and Horst Kwech (Alfa, sixth). Moffat (pictured top right) won an early season round at Loudon, New Hampshire, while Cooma, NSW-raised Kwech (top, centre) helped Alfa Romeo clinch the U2L title. However, when Jerry Titus (Mustang, #1) won the season finale and clinched the overall title for Ford it was clear that Trans-Am was on a roll – and that it would be dominated by V8s thereafter. The ponycar wars had begun.
