Stardust Raceway, Nevada, November 13, 1966 – Can-Am Round 6
Trans- Am (previous spread) was not the only series off to a spectacular start in 1966. The inaugural Canadian American Challenge Cup featured many of the sport’s biggest names, including 1964 F1 World Champion John Surtees (Lola T70 #7), who wrapped up that first title at the magnificently named Stardust Raceway. Here, the high-winged Chaparrals of Jim Hall (#66) and Phil Hill give chase on lap one, as do the likes of Kiwis Chris Amon (#5) and Bruce McLaren in McLarens, Denny Hulme, Jackie Stewart (#43), Parnelli Jones, George Follmer, Mark Donohue, Mario Andretti and more. Tasmanian Paul Hawkins (Lola) is buried deep in the field. Can-Am, like its sedan car counterpart, would burn brightly for almost a decade.
