Everywhere you turned at Bathurst this year there were pointers to the past and things that caught the eye of Great Race history buffs.

While the frontrunning Nissan Altima of Michael Caruso was decked out in the colours of the 1991 Bathurst-winning GT-R, the victorious car from 25 years ago was displayed in unique fashion in the paddock. The 1:1 model garnered plenty of attention in its display box.

h yt rs Fo ill B Glenn Seton closed the gap on Touring Car Masters’ championship leader John Bowe (Torana) at Bathurst by claiming the overall weekend honours and therefore the Trans-Tasman Challenge. The Thunder Road Racing Team Australia driver won two of the three races, which saw regular TCM competitors joined by a big contingent of Kiwis from NZ’s Central Muscle Car Series. Sunday’s win was the 1993 and ’97 ATCC winner’s third TCM race victory at Bathurst and fourth of the season. The series now heads to the season finale at Sydney Olympic Park in December.

2016 Peter Brock Trophy winner Will Davison hit the jackpot late Sunday afternoon – and, in AMC’s opinion, in the morning too! Davison drove the 1977 Bathurst pole-sitting Bill Patterson Racing A9X Torana that has been recently restored by owner Russell Stenhouse. This is the hatch that won the 1977 HangTen 400, the A9X model’s debut race. It was then driven to third on the Mountain by the Brock brothers, Peter and Phil, before being sold to Joe Moore. He drove it in the 1979 Great Race with Fred Gibson, before the car largely disappeared from public view – until now. Look for a full feature on this magnificent Torana in 2017.
