Speedway opened in June 1970 as a 410metre D-shaped dolomite and clay oval. Tralee was the name of the sheep station in theAustralian Capital Territory, near Queanbeyan, NSW, that the track was built on.
By this stage production car racing was the big thing in speedway, so Canberra promoter Peter Gurbiel figured that a Mustang would be a crowdpuller at the new venue.
