Speed­way opened in June 1970 as a 410me­tre D-shaped dolomite and clay oval. Tralee was the name of the sheep sta­tion in theAus­tralian Cap­i­tal Ter­ri­tory, near Quean­beyan, NSW, that the track was built on.

By this stage pro­duc­tion car racing was the big thing in speed­way, so Can­berra pro­moter Peter Gur­biel fig­ured that a Mus­tang would be a crowd­puller at the new venue.

It was good tim­ing. Cal­i­for­nian racer Mike Clyne was about to tour Aus­tralia in a Trans-Am Mus­tang
