AM and PM
Malcolm Fraser was prime minister of Australia from 1975 until 1983. He was best known for his role in the dismissal of the Whitlam Labor government and the phrase ‘Life wasn’t meant to be easy’. But ‘Big Mal’ was also a car buff and, as these letters and photos show, an acquaintance of Moffat. The pics here are from the ’77 Sandown 400 meeting, where Moffat chauffeured the PM on a (very) quick tour of the Sandown circuit. “He enjoyed very much the couple of laps around Sandown in the Falcon,” Moffat recalls, adding that Mr Fraser was also more than happy to accompany him on the podium at Bathurst that year. It’s very hard to imagine any scenario in which the current ‘Big Mal’ would write a letter to, say, Mark Winterbottom, thanking him for the loan of a road test Ford Focus. Or Mr Turnbull being taken for a hotlap of Sandown in a Falcon Supercar… Note that Moffat’s team added ‘pm’ to the helmet Fraser wore for his hot laps to match the ‘am’ on Moffat’s.
