Ever wondered what became of Moffat’s wrecked ‘Project B52’ Falcon – the XB Hardtop that was written off in a transporter fire on the way to Adelaide International Raceway the previous year? In August, 1977, Moffat towed the scorched, battered remains to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne – where he proceeded to take to it with an axe! As the Melbourne Herald’s reporter wrote, between blows of the axe on the Hardtop’s roof, Moffat said: “This is Peter Brock… this is Harry Firth… Allan Grice… Frank Gardner …and Bob Jane. I think I’ve finished the field.” The intention was to chop the Falcon into about 600 pieces, some of which would be autographed by Moffat, and sold off at the Sandown 400 meeting, with all proceeds going to the hospital.
