Fresh air start
Then as now, nothing happens in professional motor racing without sponsors. But while motor racing is a sport that runs on money, the corporate support teams rely on sometimes comes in indirect fashion. Here is correspondence from the managing director of IngersollRand confirming the supply to the team of an air starter motor – along with a message of best wishes for success at Bathurst. This item was presumably required to fire up the Moffat team transporter’s diesel engine. It wasn’t going to make any difference to the performance or reliability of the Moffat Ford Dealers’ Falcons at Bathurst but, dated as this document is, one week out from the Great Race, it probably played the equally-crucial role of ensuring the two race Falcons could actually be transported north from Moffat’s Malvern headquarters in Victoria to Bathurst.
