HDT Torana SL/R 5000 L34
made a lot of noise and looked spectacular, but the L34 was not a good rally car. It was, to quote HDT boss Harry Firth, “too big and heavy, too clumsy on a rally circuit. It was a boat anchor, like trying to run with a brick in each hand.” It was also slower than the team’s old XU-1 rally cars, but the Holden chiefs would not let a frustrated Firth use the older model. Nor did htey warm to his idea of the perfect Holden rally car: a Gemini with XU-1 running gear.
