made a lot of noise and looked spec­tac­u­lar, but the L34 was not a good rally car. It was, to quote HDT boss Harry Firth, “too big and heavy, too clumsy on a rally cir­cuit. It was a boat an­chor, like try­ing to run with a brick in each hand.” It was also slower than the team’s old XU-1 rally cars, but the Holden chiefs would not let a frus­trated Firth use the older model. Nor did htey warm to his idea of the per­fect Holden rally car: a Gem­ini with XU-1 run­ning gear.
