Australian Muscle Car

“The article on Norm Beechey in issue #100 prompted me to dig through my photos from the 1993 Australian Hillclimb Championship,” writes Stephen. “The AHC was held at Ararat in Victoria that year and Beechey ran the Impala at this event. The Impala looked like a massive beast on the tourist road that runs up the hill at Ararat. He was there to have a serious run though and won the Class for Historic Sa and N cars with a best time of 56.74 seconds. Also competing at this event was Bob Jones in his Ampol Commodore. Jones won the Class for Group A tourers (ED: as those early ve-litre cars were called then) over two-litre with a best time of 47.67 seconds. Over the weekend Jones was happy to chat with the spectators whilst he was waiting for his next run. No doubt there were plenty of locals who enjoyed being able to chat with a contemporary touring car driver and talk about V8 Holdens over the course of the weekend. Whilst the AHC may have been a low key event compared to the touring car rounds that Jones was normally contesting he was de nitely exploring the limits at Ararat. The rst tight right hand corner has claimed many a car over the years and on one run Jones came in a bit too hot and locked a front wheel in spectacular fashion.”
