knightscope’s k5 IS THE DROI D you’re look­ing for. A law-en­force­ment con­cept straight out of Sil­i­con Val­ley, its cap­sule of high­grade mil­i­tary sur­veil­lance tech on wheels is RoboCop re­born as R2-D2. De­signed to tackle petty crime by mon­i­tor­ing its en­vi­ron­ment con­stantly, it analy­ses people’s be­hav­iour to pre­dict when crimes are oc­cur­ing and then shares that in­for­ma­tion with au­thor­i­ties and the wider com­mu­nity via so­cial net­works.

Be­hind that steely gaze sit ther­mal imag­ing sen­sors, a 360-de­gree HD cam­era, mi­cro­phones, in­frared, 3D laser-map­ping and air-qual­ity sen­sors to sniff out sub­stance abuse or in­dus­trial ac­ci­dents. It also con­tains op­tional char­ac­ter-recog­ni­tion soft­ware that searches and tops up a cen­tralised data­base of ne’er-do-wells.
