De­spite pop­u­lar myth, NASA did not in­vent the cord­less drill, that was Black & Decker in 1961. Yet the space bods’ de­mand for a por­ta­ble drill that could ex­tract sam­ples from the moon’s sur­face did lead to the in­ven­tion of a low power-con­sump­tion mo­tor that helped in the de­vel­op­ment of the first Dust­buster hand­held vac.
