McLaren’s new 650S is a souped-up su­per­car with a high-tech heart

IF Geneva’s AN­NUA L mo­tor show IS Big Day Out for petrol-heads, McLaren’s strik­ing new 650S was this year’s Pearl Jam, an ex­citable, crowd-pleas­ing head­line act built on a flaw­less back cat­a­logue.

Tak­ing its de­sign lead from the $1.5 mil­lion, Forza 5- cham­pi­oning P1, the 650 refers to the pfer­destärke – or horse­power, for non-Ger­man speak­ers – that surges from its twin turbo V8.

Show­stop­ping el­e­ments from the P1 re­main, in­clud­ing gull-wing doors and blade LED head­lights, while all-new body­work cre­ates 24 per cent more down­force than even the brutish 12C.
