time for an action replay
In the high-octane, big-budget car chase that is this action camera group test, there are no total wipeouts. Every camera here has the ability to record your most daring of exploits. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a certain amount of mild jeopardy, so let us take you through the action again, blow by blow.
First, let us introduce the star, all squared jaw and machismo: the GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition. Edging out the Garmin Virb Elite in a nail-biting neck and neck battle, the GoPro leads the pack thanks to its top-notch video and audio, plus its scene-stealing range of accessories. Garmin’s plucky newcomer has all the tricks, including a built-in accelerometer and GPS, but its bulkier build and lack of finesse when shooting in low light means it’s reduced to the role of wingman.
Sony’s HDR-AS30V, a slightly wimpy sidekick, performs well in the day, but disappoints when the lights are out. In contrast, the powerfully built Drift Ghost-S boasts both the brains and brawn, but doesn’t quite have the video quality for a starring role.
