When he wasn’t busy can­celling Blur’s head­line slot at the Big Day Out or pre­tend­ing to be a melod­i­cally gifted cartoon char­ac­ter with Go­ril­laz, Damon Al­barn found the time to record a new solo al­bum. The weary tone of the record­ing is summed up per­fectly by its cover art, with Al­barn slumped in a stool star­ing at his shoes. Rubbish af­ter all – he can al­ways be counted on to deliver a big cho­rus when needed. There’s less of that here, but that’s fine.
