the new s-class combines luxury, efficiency and tech

Australian T3 - - TECH LIFE -

1,500W sound system and even a system to scent the air – no tree-shaped air fresheners will dangle from the S-Class’s rear-view mirror. Replacing the dashboard, you’ll find two 12.3-inch HD displays. One acts as an instrument cluster, the other a window into the COMAND multimedia system, with USB, Bluetooth and 3G delivering internet radio, apps and a web browser. The latter is best avoided; you’re better off connecting your smartphone to the S-Class’s own 3G hotspot.

Want more cutting-edge car tech? How about an infra-red camera for night drives that scans for pedestrians and highlights them in red. Is it useful? No, but it does make you feel like you’re in a video game and gives a glimpse of how autonomous cars will identify hazards in the future. Speaking of autonomous tech, activate the Distronic Plus cruise control and Steering Assist systems and the S350 BlueTEC will guide itself, staying safely in lane, accelerating, braking and steering without any driver input.

There are flashier, faster and pricier luxury cars. But none can best the Mercedes Benz S-Class back at its world-beating best. $TBC,, out now
