ACROSS THE AGES: ATTRACTION THAT WON’T WANE
Kenworth says its display at the Brisbane Truck Show of the new T610 and the rst of its Legend 900 limited edition trucks simply highlights the brand’s broad appeal to a dedicated market.
The T610 is unquestionably the biggest new model development from Kenworth in 30 years, whereas the Legend 900 is the re- creation of a model rst introduced 26 years ago.
“There is an irony in that,” Paccar Australia sales and marketing director Brad May says.
“It’s something we discussed at length, whether or not it was a conicting message, but we recognised there’s a portion of buyers who are very much attached to the past. They’re possibly, and probably, the same people who will buy T610 for their business but may also buy a Legend 900 as a source of pride in where they’ve come from and what they’ve achieved. “And why shouldn’t they?” Operator response to both models has been exceptional, with May commenting: “On one hand we’re showing people new technology, and on the other reminding people of our shared histories.
“But I don’t want anyone to think the 900 is an old truck,” he insists.
“From the chassis to the engine and driveline, it’s as relevant and modern as any truck we now produce, so it is by no means just a trophy truck.
“In every sense it’s a modern working truck, just liveried in a way that simply reminds people of the past.”
Critically, with a Cummins X15 under the hood, the Legend 900 has the same cooling capacity as the current T909, making it entirely capable of doing exactly the same work, from ‘round-town truck and dog duties to heavy- duty roadtrain roles.
“That’s the great attribute of the X15. Being an SCR engine, it doesn’t put anywhere near the same cooling demand on a truck as the EGR engine did,” he concludes.
