NEW CAB OR NOT? THAT AWAITS DEMAND
It was an obvious question: When will the T909 get the 2.1m-wide cab tted to Kenworth’s new T610?
With a shrewd smile, Brad May answers simply: “Not sure, really, but I can tell you it denitely won’t be tomorrow or anytime soon.”
The T9’s current 1.83m-wide cab dates back to the original T600 from the mid-80s so it seems fair to assume that, given the big investment in the T610, the new cab will be eventually used across Kenworth’s conventional range.
“Right now, there’s no pressing demand for the wider cab on the T9,” May continues, “but over the next few years we will sound the market out and see what appetite there is for it.
“In the meantime, we’ll let the wide cab continue to establish itself in the T610 and perhaps some other models.”
While he wouldn’t be drawn on ‘other models’, the next truck with the wide cab will almost certainly be a T410.
“Whatever happens, it has to be the right product for customers,” May says.
“Change is not always readily accepted or sought by truck buyers but, that said, once advantages of a particular product are established – be it a wider cab or whatever – it normally doesn’t take long to see a change in thinking.
“I have no doubt the wider cab on the T9 will come. When? Five years, maybe!” he says with shrug.
In other words, don’t hold your breath.
Kenworth T610. The model’s 2.1m-wide cab won’t be nding a home on the T9 chassis anytime soon
