I love Rottnest Island because it’s a unique and special place that you can only get to by boat. There’s so much wildlife – huge stingrays, pelicans, crabs and cute quokkas that are so tame you can get really close. The beaches are really clean and clear, which means the swimming and snorkelling is awesome, and the island is perfect for cycling as there are no cars. Bells Rapids is an amazing place to visit. The Swan River winds through a big ravine and after the rain, it’s really exciting to see the white water foaming below. Sometimes we see the canoes in the rapids. It’s such a natural environment ideal for walking (with your dog, too), a picnic, paddling in the shallows, nature trails, and kangaroo spotting. Dangling from the SkyRail gondolas is fun! It’s a great way to get a view over Cairns and also see tropical rainforest, the Barron River and Barron Falls. The SkyRail goes between Kuranda and Cairns and there are two stops where you can get off and explore. My favourite part is the ranger’s guided tour at the Red Peak stop. The ranger told us lots of interesting things about the plants there and how they live and grow together and which ones to avoid touching! Green Island can be visited on a day trip or you can stay overnight in the beautiful resort. You can snorkel and dive, but if you want to stay dry there are glass-bottom boat rides and also a semi-submerged submarine where you can see the ocean life. I love snorkelling around the beautiful coral and fish, and wondering what I’m going to find next!
