OUR re­cent sur­vey con­firmed that 94 per cent of read­ers like to shop lo­cally; and that’s not all they like about our lo­cal patch.

The Hills Gazette sur­veyed lo­cals over the past few weeks to iden­tify favourite parks, drink­ing places and even where to ser­vice a car.

Not sur­pris­ingly, cof­fee shops, pubs and Swan Val­ley winer­ies came up big in the poll.

Patch of Coun­try ‘tea shoppe’ and Dome Mid­land were par­tic­u­larly popular.

We like Mondo’s in Mid­land for its va­ri­ety and af­ford­abil­ity.

What shone through dur­ing our sur­vey was just how wide ap­pre­ci­a­tion was for the lo­cal area.

Whether it be a quiet part of the Hills or a bustling Satur­day in Mid­land, our eater­ies are the equiv­a­lent of any in the metropoli­tan area and our busi­nesses proud of the per­sonal ser­vice they pro­vide to cus­tomers

A sur­vey by NAB found Aus­tralian busi­nesses re­ceive 45 per cent of their sales from lo­cal cus­tomers. Con­sumers say they pre­fer to shop lo­cally but we all need to fol­low through on our con­vic­tions.

So this week, here at the Gazette, we are en­cour­ag­ing read­ers to visit the lo­cal baker, buy from the lo­cal florist and sit down at your neigh­bour­hood cof­fee shop.

Even bet­ter, con­tinue to do so through­out the year, be­cause in this area, the buck stops with small busi­ness.

If lo­cal shops thrive – the star­tups, in­de­pen­dents and fam­ily busi­nesses – the lo­cal econ­omy thrives and ul­ti­mately, jobs are cre­ated.
