All-Stars bring home trophy

Avon Valley Gazette - - SPORT - Lynn Grierson

SWAN Districts Little League All-Stars did the nation proud when they brought home the under-12s Singapore Baseball Classic trophy.

The 11 and 12-year-old players defeated the Singapore American School 8-0 to win the 2015 championship, which drew teams from the USA, Japan, China, Singapore and U.A.E.

The Swans team was undefeated going into the championship games in Singapore on January 22, having won all three seeding games and their semi-final.

Head coach Michael Carter said the team’s performance leading up to the championship game was strong both defensively and offensively, with batting and pitching being the standouts.

The team scored 45 runs in the four games leading up to the championship game and gave up only 11.

Having already beaten the SAS team in a seeding game, the Swans team was confident of victory.

“We knew that if we stuck to our game plan of being aggressive at bat and consistently throwing strikes to avoid walking batters, we would win the championship," Carter said.

The Swans continued their great batting display in the championship game and created an infield wall the SAS team could not penetrate.

“This, together with a great pitching display by Dustin Brown, lead to the 8-0 score line,” Carter said.

“Despite their young age, the majority of the players in this team have been playing together for over four years and are good friends, and this creates a strong sense of team where everyone has each other’s back.

“This team spirit gives us a great advantage in tough situations.

“It was a tremendous team effort over the three days of the tournament in hot and humid conditions, and players have done their state, club and parents proud.”

In addition to winning the championship, Josh Dass was named MVP of the Tournament for his consistent pitching performance, Jordan Norvall won the Silver Slugger award for batting the highest average (.570) over the tournament and Daniel Carter won the Home Run Derby, hitting 11 home run in the competition.

The team thanked Hyde and Son Master Builders, Swan Hills MLA Frank Alban, Bunnings Midland, Swan Districts Baseball Club, Cynthia Bracegirdle and parents and family for their support.
