Tips to avoid snake bites

RE­SEARCH in­di­cates about 3000 peo­ple are bit­ten by snakes ev­ery year, with fig­ures at their high­est in Jan­uary.

A pet sus­pected of hav­ing a snake bite should be taken im­me­di­ately to the clos­est emer­gency vet.

Ac­cord­ing to Pet In­sur­ance Aus­tralia, the fol­low­ing steps could help pre­vent snake bites:

Keep pets on a leash in bush or long grass;

Keep lawns and grass short;

Move wood­piles away from dog ar­eas;

Check for snakes and skins;

Leave wa­ter fea­tures empty;

Con­sider keep­ing cats in­doors dur­ing these months.
