WHEATBELT NEEDS MORE FUNDING

Avon Valley Gazette - - OPINION -

THE McGowan government has dismissed from the Wheatbelt Catchment Alliance of WA a submission to jointly fund drainage of saline water from Wheatbelt catchment channels.

For every kilometre of drainage financed by Government, farmers would construct 1.5km of interconnecting pipes at their own expense.

About 9 per cent of the Wheatbelt’s 9 million hectares cleared for agriculture is unproductive because of salt encroachment, yet three quarters of this could be recovered in the long term by introducing a controlled and regulated drainage system.

$ 674 million of Royalties for Regions allocation has been hijacked to service election promises and pay back debt.

Are beneficiaries of Metronet dipping into hip pockets to compromise the Government’s investment? WILL DUNNE, Forrestfield
