New art on landscape
MUNDARING Arts Centre has opened its 2018 exhibition program by celebrating the creativity of local artists.
The Shire of Mundaring art acquisition showcase, Landscapes of the Mind, features the work of invited artists Sarah Elson, Bec Juniper, Andre Lipscombe, Desmond Woodley and Yvonne Zago.
Artworks are picked from the annual exhibition for the Shire of Mundaring art collection.
Shire President John Daw announced the works purchased for the collection at the exhibition opening last Friday.
The newly- acquired pieces are Cultivated Painting, an acrylic paint on board by Andre Lipscombe; Lament of the Labellum – anaphora 7, recycled silver by Sarah Elson; and Where They Dwell, handpainted stoneware by Yvonne Zago and wheel thrown by Bernard Kerr.
Visitors to the exhibition can vote for their favourite piece for the people’s choice award.
Mundaring Arts Centre curator Jenny Kerr said the artworks varied in theme and philosophical approach to present the artists’ relationship with their community and the environment.
A second exhibition titled At the Heart is also on show, with selected work from the Shire’s art collection by 15 artists including Sieglinde Battley, Merrick Belyea, Mac Betts and Alex Boddington.
The Shire of Mundaring art collection began in 1985 and now has about 180 works, ranging from paintings, works on paper, photography and textiles, to mixed media objects and sculptures.
A program of demonstrations and talks will accompany the exhibitions, including a ‘ meet the artists’ talk and discussion with collection curators on Sunday, March 25.
