New art on land­scape

MUN­DAR­ING Arts Cen­tre has opened its 2018 ex­hi­bi­tion pro­gram by cel­e­brat­ing the cre­ativ­ity of lo­cal artists.

The Shire of Mun­dar­ing art ac­qui­si­tion show­case, Land­scapes of the Mind, fea­tures the work of in­vited artists Sarah El­son, Bec Ju­niper, An­dre Lip­scombe, Des­mond Woodley and Yvonne Zago.

Art­works are picked from the an­nual ex­hi­bi­tion for the Shire of Mun­dar­ing art col­lec­tion.

Shire Pres­i­dent John Daw an­nounced the works pur­chased for the col­lec­tion at the ex­hi­bi­tion open­ing last Fri­day.

The newly- ac­quired pieces are Cul­ti­vated Paint­ing, an acrylic paint on board by An­dre Lip­scombe; Lament of the La­bel­lum – anaphora 7, re­cy­cled sil­ver by Sarah El­son; and Where They Dwell, hand­painted stoneware by Yvonne Zago and wheel thrown by Bernard Kerr.

Vis­i­tors to the ex­hi­bi­tion can vote for their favourite piece for the peo­ple’s choice award.

Mun­dar­ing Arts Cen­tre cu­ra­tor Jenny Kerr said the art­works var­ied in theme and philo­soph­i­cal ap­proach to present the artists’ re­la­tion­ship with their com­mu­nity and the en­vi­ron­ment.

A sec­ond ex­hi­bi­tion ti­tled At the Heart is also on show, with se­lected work from the Shire’s art col­lec­tion by 15 artists in­clud­ing Sieglinde Bat­t­ley, Mer­rick Be­lyea, Mac Betts and Alex Bod­ding­ton.

The Shire of Mun­dar­ing art col­lec­tion be­gan in 1985 and now has about 180 works, rang­ing from paint­ings, works on pa­per, pho­tog­ra­phy and tex­tiles, to mixed me­dia ob­jects and sculp­tures.

A pro­gram of demon­stra­tions and talks will ac­com­pany the ex­hi­bi­tions, in­clud­ing a ‘ meet the artists’ talk and dis­cus­sion with col­lec­tion cu­ra­tors on Sun­day, March 25.
