Students making a difference

HELENA College students are creating a profile in the community by raising social and environmental awareness through their personal projects.

Each Year 10 student works on a longterm project in the final phase of the school’s International Baccalaureate ( IB) middle- years program.

Brodie Lawson, of Greenmount, made a reusable alternative to plastic food wrap from natural raw wax sourced from Bee Sting Honey in Gidgegannup.

“I got the idea online when I was looking for alternatives to plastic wrap after discussions in school about a war on waste,” he said.

“Once I had trialled the initial recipe, I then modified to make the product longer- lasting and more sustainable whilst using locallysourced ingredients.”

He began selling the wraps to family and friends and they proved so popular that he set up a stall for local markets and festivals.

His products will be available at the inaugural Blue Sky Festival in Mundaring on Saturday and the Perth Hills Artisan Markets at Helena College on March 24.

His project involved making a ‘ tent’ to keep bees away as he melts the wax to make his washable wraps.

He estimated in the past four months he had made about 700 wraps in different colours.

He plans to plough profits from sales into his business to add more biodegradable products to his range.

For her IB project, Parkerville’s Jordyn Hullett organised ' The Girl Empowerment Project’, an expo spotlighting the selfesteem, image and confidence of adolescent girls.

The expo will feature a talk by 2005 Australian of the Year Fiona Wood at Guildford Town Hall on March 25.

Year 10 projects will be open to the public at Helena College from April 10 to 12.
