Avon Valley Gazette - - WHAT'S ON - Tanya MacNaughton

IT is not every day that a famous songwriter congratulates Perth soprano Clara Helms for covering his song, but that is exactly what happened after she recorded her latest single with producer Thomas Spencer in LA last August. “Eric Carmen, who originally wrote the song, recently wrote to me on Twitter and said ‘ It’s absolutely gorgeous. Your voice is incredible… pure and angelic. Thank you for your beautiful new version of my song, Clara’,” Helms said. “I am so grateful for his acknowledgement.” This followed praise from Paul Farberman, manager to Celine Dion who had a huge hit with the song and is one of Helms’ biggest idols. “I think Celine Dion is the epitome of the perfect star. She is a wonderful balance of feminine and feisty, sensitive and resilient. Her voice is strong and the words are so sweet,” Helms said. “A friend wrote ‘ You have established yourself as not just the next Celine Dion but the world’s first Clara Helms’, which I thought was poignantly beautiful and very flattering.”

Helms grew up studying dance, drama and piano but it was not until her mid- teens that she discovered singing and went on to study a Bachelor of Classical Music Performance at WAAPA and languages ( Italian, German and French) at UWA.

She moved to Sydney in 2016 after being a finalist on the 2011 season of

“There were some opportunities that came from it and some doors did start to open, but there was also a catch, or a price to pay, which wasn’t something I felt totally comfortable with,” Helms said.

“Yet I was determined to never give up on my passion and my dreams, because this is my love. I got to LA and threw myself into the deep end and within five minutes of recording vocals, I broke down crying over peppermint tea because it was so real and raw for me.

“I am always passionately hungry to pursue my dreams but this trip reignited an even more powerful fire within me.”
