Tony’s no mug about royalty

Avon Valley Gazette - - NEWS - Sarah Brookes

A COLLECTION of mugs commemorating weddings, coronations and jubilees in the British royal family over the past century is on display in Kalamunda ahead of the nuptials of Prince Harry and Hollywood actor Meghan Markle this Saturday.

Kalamunda resident Tony Gardiner ( 85) said he had been collecting the royal memorabilia for half a century.

“I was always fascinated by the royal mugs, so I started collecting them as a hobby,” he said.

“My favourite one is the official mug marking Prince Charles and Diana’s wedding in 1981.

“The oldest one I have is for the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911.”

Also among his collection is a mug marking the coronation of King Edward VIII, who sparked a constitutional crisis when he renounced the throne in 1936 so he could marry American socialite Wallis Simpson.

Royal memorabilia took off under the reign of Queen Victoria and dates back to her wedding to Prince Albert in 1840.

Mr Gardiner said he wanted to share his collection of mugs with the public ahead of Saturday’s royal wedding at Windsor Castle.

“I didn’t have room to display the mugs in my house, so rather than storing them away and letting them gather dust I thought it would be nice for the general public to be able to view them,” he said.

Mr Gardiner said he would be among the anticipated three billion people around the world expected to tune in to watch the royal wedding.

“My wife Elisabeth is a dedicated royalist and my daughter is keen to watch it, so I will likely watch it as well,” he said.

Mr Gardiner, married for 50 years, offered his own sage advice to Prince Harry and Ms Markle on what makes a successful marriage.

“Marriage isn’t made in heaven, it’s made in the bed,” he said.

The display is at Priceline at the Kalamunda Shopping Centre until Monday.
