Kangaranga Do party attracts travellers

Balonne Beacon - - NEWS -

FAMILIES travelling through Quilpie to the Birdsville Races stopped off for a spot of country fun at the annual Kangaranga Do Street Party held last Tuesday.

The event drew a crowd of more than 400 revellers, from as far afield as north Queensland and New South Wales, who were keen to try their hand at one of the unconventional activities on the party line-up, such as bath tub racing, wool baling and the infamous “get your rocks off” rock lifting competition.

For those only there to watch the action, there was a range of food stalls, a bar and a DJ that carried the event late into the evening.

The party took over the length of Brolga St in town, and was organised and sponsored by the Quilpie Imperial Hotel Motel.

Quilpie Imperial Hotel Motel owner Ann Lewis said the event made for an interesting pit stop for weary travellers.

“This year was consistent with the last couple, we had a great crowd. Many were travellers stopping in on their way to the Birdsville races,” Ms Lewis said.

“This year we even had a minor crash, as two of the tubs careered into the median strip. Nobody was hurt, but it was a very funny spectacle. The bath tubs have a mind of their own once they get going.”

The Adavale team took top prize in the rocks off comp, with the bathtub derby too close to judge.
